Sundar Balasubramanian PHD Biochemistry and a cell biology researcher at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston), shares his research on yoga with us, with special attention to yogic breathing – also known as Pranayama.

Through Sundar’s scientific research, he shows us key biomarkers' expression after Pranayama practice. The effects of yoga breathing has wide implications in management of several chronic illnesses, and into the understanding the biological mechanisms of Yoga. Sundar is one of the very few IAYT-certified Yoga therapists specialized in Pranayama.

About Sundar Balasubramanian

Sundar Balasubramanian was born in Tamilnadu, India – in a family that has been practicing Yoga and Siddha medicine for generations. At a young age, he learnt and perfected various Asanas, Pranayama, Meditation and Kirtan, and also demonstrated its benefits to the community. After successfully completing his PhD dissertation in Biochemistry, he accepted a fellowship in the United States to further advance his research. 

He has spoken at TEDx Charleston and has published books like PranaScience: Decoding Yoga Breathing. He is also a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) having undertaken certifications at institutions in India and the USA, including Yoga of the Heart and Cancer, Yogaville, VA, USA. He the Founder Director of the PranaScience Institute, Mt Pleasant, SC, USA and also the Founder Director of Yoga Education Trust, Karambakkudi, India.
